After reading about the use of SeaBuckthorn oil by astronauts, I was reminded that “Christ” means the “anointed”, which could be a nice lead for an new (rather messy) performance with our astronauts in the Jerusalem church in Amsterdam. This page collects research on the history anointments and the use of (plant-based) medicine for astronauts.

Anointment recipe used for Jesus link

  • 500 shekels (about 6 kg) of myrrh, according to the Ra'avad. Maimonides translates this substance as musk,
  • half as much (about 3 kg) of fragrant cinnamon,
  • 250 shekels (about 3 kg) of fragrant cane, “kaneh bosm,” variously translated as calamus or cannabis),
  • 500 shekels (about 6kg) of cassia, and
  • a hin (about 4 L according to Shiurei Torah, 7 L according to the Chazon Ish) of olive oil.

The container of oil is called Chrismatory a nicely decorated jar.

Some medical aids used by astronauts:

SeaBuckthorn oil has been used to counter the effects of radiation for astronauts link

Duindoorn moet hen tegen sterke stralingen beschermen.

Siberian ginseng or Eleuthero root link

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) There has been much research into Siberian ginseng in Russia since the 1950s, although the exact method by which it stimulates stamina and resistance to stress is not yet understood. Siberian ginseng seems to have a general tonic effect on the body, in particular on the adrenal glands, helping the body to withstand heat, cold, infection, other physical stresses and radiation. It has even been given to astronauts to counter the effects of weightlessness. Athletes have experienced as much as a 9% improvement in stamina when taking Siberian ginseng.
