We landed at the Sky Harbour around midnight. After a dazed stumble through the near deserted airport we found ourselves in a dark, semi-covered street, smelling of fuel and stale exhaust fumes. Deep shadows lingering in the air speckled with particulate dust, distant sounds of unseen critters. In a desert marked by stark contrasts between heat and chill, adoration and dread, escape and extraction.

Our gradual attunement to the desert expanse, its climate, rhythms and scales became an experiment in communing rather than examining. An exploration of an embodied sense of layered time and material wonder. Being part of the world without romanticising wilderness or drawing hard distinctions between the desert and the urban environments within it.

Dust and Shadow soundwalk

One of the public outcomes of field trip #3 is the Dust and Shadow soundwalk, in collaboration with the Museum of Walking.

The Dust & Shadow soundwalk is an experiment in attunement to an urban desert environment through diverse forms of listening. Walking in silence through the Sonoran dust in the shadow of civilisation, the walkers may begin to hear the murmur of matter, uncover desert refugia amidst urban life, and forge new connections with the unexpected.

7 – 8 Phoenix to Grand Canyon. 4 hours drive (We can stop in Flagstaff (midway))
8 – 9 Grand Canyon to Page. Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. 2 hours drive
9 – 10 Page to Bryce Canyon. 2 hours 30 min drive
11th? Petrified Forest 6 hours with multiple stop location options
(maybe Meteor Crater which is between the Petrified Forest and Flagstaff)
Return on the 12th
